Baking is a great way to keep your kids entertained and get them to take an interest in both food and science, as well as encourage their maths, reading and even life skills. Plus, you get to eat the results! Here are some tips for making it as enjoyable an experience as possible for everyone.
1 embrace the mess
It will be messy, but that’s the best part for children – they’ll love getting their hands dirty! If you can’t handle the thought of all the cleaning afterwards, try to contain the mess. Put a large baking tray, old newspapers or a wipe-clean tablecloth under the mixing bowls, or make the messiest tasks mummy or daddy jobs. And don’t forget aprons for everyone!
2keep it simple
There are lots of easy baking recipes that are perfect for little ones. Fairy cakes are a doddle to make, as are muffins, biscuits and simple cakes like a classic Victoria sponge. Why not get started with a delicious rocky road and see how it goes?
3Ready, Set, Decorate!
Let your kids get hands-on with the really fun part of baking – decorating! You could set a theme and turn it into a competition. Make a simple biscuit, have a selection of chocolate buttons, dolly mixtures, sprinkles, icing and maybe a few healthy fresh berries at hand, and see what designs they come up with!
